Habitat Loss
More than half of plant and animals species live in forests. Many birds nest high in trees, squirrels and other small animals use tress for shelter, and trees provide a food source for other animals. By destroying trees animals are forced to relocate to new areas causing a disruption to animal’s habitat. Furthermore, the ecosystem is out of balance and the food cycle is disrupted.
The food cycle is negatively affected by deforestation. When animals are forced to relocate other animals above them in the food chain are forced to follow and so on. At its worse, the deforestation effects can lead to species extinction. It is estimated that the earth is losing 137 plant animal and insect species every day to rain forest deforestation. This equals about 50,000 species a year.
